The basic mechanisms involved in wide variety of engineering and biological processes depend on properties ofnonintegrable distributions. It often happens that in their most efficient form, the dynamical variables follow trajectories which are closed subriemannian geodesics. In this talk we will establish some of the more remarkable properties of such trajectories, with emphasis on the especially tractable situations involving subriemannian structures on manifolds that admit, in addition to their subriemannian structure, the structure of a Riemann symmetric space.
