Since the foundation of the UAM in 1968, the Department has grown to a considerable size, with a decided push for the excellence. The Department has been a leader in the mathematics research in Spain in the past decades. It has a great amount of postdoctoral poisitions like "Ramón y Cajal" and "Juan de la Cierva" positions, as well as visiting researchers and foreign graduate students.

With a high teaching dedication

The UAM offers a degree in Mathematics and a double degree in Computer Science-Mathematics for which 90 students enter each year. In past years, the average academic records of the students entering this double degree (8.72 out of a maximun of 10 in 2007), has been the highest of all the degrees offered in the Comunidad de Madrid. There exists also an international agreement of a double degree with the Université de Paris-Dauphine.

The department has also the responsibility for the teaching of the majority of the mathematical courses  offered by the Facultad de Ciencias and the Escuela Politécnica Superior de la UAM, with a total 50.000+ registered credits in 2010/11.

The Department offers a Graduate program with two specialties of master and doctorate, both adapted to the European higher education system. In a recent German publication (CHE Excellence Ranking 2007/08)  the mathematics Graduate program of the UAM has been listed in the 20 European excellence Graduate programs in mathematics. Moreover, the doctorate in mathematics of the UAM gained the Quality Mention of the MEC (Ministry of Education and Science). The quality of the last  27 (within the last 5 years)  doctoral dissertations can be judged by the journals where their results have been published in.
